SWOLLEN CREEK WAS NO DETERRENT

During sharing time several stories about our grandparents and/or parents were told. Karen shared this story about Grandmother Clara as told to Kathy Harder Krehbiel by Heddie Wall Harden

"Grandpa Wall (Abraham K Wall) was a heavy smoker in his day and loved his tobacco. Then one day he ran out and was too busy to go to town to get more. So he turned to Grandma (Clara Wall) and said, "You must go and get it for me." Grandma, of course couldn't say "no," or probably didn't dare say "no." She hitched up Old Tom to the buggy, loaded Three little girls and started out after a heavy rain the night before.

After driving about two of the five miles to town, she reached the creek which was often swollen and found the water had risen to a depth which frightened her, and knowing she dared not go back home, prayed to God, and the good Lord told her how to handle it. Thus, she got out of the buggy, tied Old Tom to a tree and gently lifted Mary out of the buggy; waded through the water with Mary, sat her down on the other side and gave her an order to sit tight. Then she waded back trough the water and gently came after Carrie and again giving orders to sit tight, returned to Anna, carried her on through The water and lastly, went back after the buggy. She was not about to put the babies through such a frightening experience by driving through the water with them.

Then on to town, she loaded the tobacco, a few groceries and scurried back to the bridge. Since the water had not receded, she followed the same pattern with the girls because Grandpa told her to waste no time. They got home just when Grandpa was smoking his last Grandma being a godly woman, praised God for the protection she had experienced from God. Soon after this, Grandpa had a yearning to quit the foolish habit and when it became reality he quit "cold turkey"- no more ifs, ands, or buts. Grandma tanked God and felt it was all His leading."
